The
Tossachat

The Ten Previous incarnations of the Buddha

The Chadok, or Jataka Tales, recounting the Buddha’s previous incarnations are a popular theme for decorations in the interior of temples. In central Thailand, murals are usually based on the Tossachat. In Lanna until the mid 19th century, the themes depended upon the wishes of the murals donor. Jataka stories not from the Tossachat can be seen in the Viharn Nam Tern of Wat Phratat Lampang Luang, the Phra Viharn of Wat Ta Kham, Mae Teng, Viharn Lai Kham, Wat Phra Singh and Wats Pu Mm and Nong Bua in Nan Province. Lanna murals showing the Tossachat can be seen at Wat Pa Daet, Mae Jeni and Wat Buak Krok Luang, Chiang Mai.

The Tossachat of Wat Srisuphan were executed in aluminum by craftsmen from the nearby workshops. The stories tell of how the hero overcomes adversity by following the five precepts and by treating other beings, even enemies, with kindness, compassion, equanimity and sympathetic joy. The stories begin on the northern wall beside the Sattabun and Krubar Sriwichai Shrine.
