Welcome to Watsrisuphan

Wat Srisuphan was constructed by Phraya Pilok Pannadatiraj and his mother, Queen Suriyasawasdee. Phraya Pilokpanadatiraj ruled at the end of Lanna’s golden age and is more commonly known as Phraya Muang Gaew. He was also responsible for the construction and restoration of Wat Phra Singh and Wat Rampoeng. The stela now housed in the golden mondop beside the Phra Viharn records that the temple was sanctified on the 30th of March 1500. When the temple was first constructed, the only buildings were the Phra Ubosoth which is the monks’ ordination hall and the Phra Chedi which enshrines sacred objects.

The Phra Ubosoth

The present Phra Ubosoth was built in 1860 by Phraya Kawila. The present Ubosoth is built in the style of the original built in the 16th century and is a well preserved example of Lanna architecture. The Phra Ubosoth enshrines two important Buddha images. The oldest is the Phra Putta Padiharn, the second is 500 years younger and is called Phra Putta  Ha Loi Pee. Phra Putta Padiharn means the Buddha of miracles.

Phra Bratan

Phra Bratan, the presiding Buddha image, is one of the largest in Chiang Mai. The image is very beautifully sculpted in pure Lanna style. The two smaller images represent the Buddha’s two major disciples who attained enlightenment, Phra Anon and Phra Sariboot (Ananda Mahathera and Sariputta Mahathera.)
